TF20
was designed and built in 1987 as a proof-of- concept vehicle. It was made of
garden variety wood and fiberglass. It used a Hobie 16 mast and a Hobie 18 main.
It was transported on top of a van and took it out solo.
The
ultimate goal was to break the world speed record for sailboats. Icarus held the
B class record at 28 knots and Crossbow had the outright record at 36 knots. TF20
had the potential to get the B class record, but 36 knots might have been a little
too fast.
The
amas and main foils had tbe ability to rotate about the main beam for beaching.
This
is one of the first days out at Cabrillo Beach.
A
good, cold, winter day at Lake Perris.
In
late 1988 we took the boat to Lake Buchanon, Texas, to participate in speed trials
organized by Ned Snead. We had some problems, but managed one official run of
about 26 knots. Ned Snead was a great host and we had a great time.
